This piece grew out of a collaboration with Sandglass Theater on Babylon, their 2017 piece that explores the refugee crisis. With the text, I was trying to imagine the experience of a Syrian refugee trying to cross the sea to Greece and feeling abandoned by God. The text refers to an early surah in the Quran, beseeching Allah to guide believers to the straight path. Here it’s turned on its head to suggest a feeling of abandonment. The melody is based on Lamma Bada, a popular Syrian song.  (F# minor. 3/2).
