Inspired by the traditional Appalachian version of this hymn (which is essentially a 4/4 version of the shape note classic Idumea), this piece is dedicated to my memory of my aunt, Jean Reddin, who lived on Rochestown Park in Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin. At her month’s mind (a traditional family gathering held a month after she died), my cousin Jane leaned over to me and said, ‘she loved the bones of you’. The knowledge of that love is something I cherish always.
